Melvin was born January 29, 1935, in Sperry, OK to Benjamin Wood “Ben” and Iva Myrtle (Hardie) Brown. He passed away October 22, 2021, in Tulsa, OK.
Melvin worked for Dowell, Seismograph Corp, Lowrance Electronics, Goodwill Industries and Time Mark Corp. After his retirement, Melvin went on to drive buses for Sperry Public Schools and other companies for several years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Sperry along with his wife, Judy for over 60 years. Melvin was a faithful follower of all of his children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events, and other activities as well, as a lifelong Sperry Pirate. He loved following and supporting OU athletics, any type of fishing and other outdoor activities, as well as bluegrass, country and gospel music. Melvin had an amazing knack for fixing things and loved to help others anytime that he was asked. He could and did often strike up a conversation with total strangers as well as he loved visiting with family and telling stories; sometimes they were true and never embellished. Melvin was an Olympic snoring champion and that was validated by his email address, Snoreboy401. He was famous for inventing the “Brown” shortcut, which was never a shortcut, and on several occasions, he would end up at Braum’s Ice Cream Store.
He is survived by his children, Kimberly Bailey and husband, Jeff of Sperry, Kevin Brown, Sr. and wife, Crystal of Vera, and Larry Brown and wife, Annmarie of Cleveland; grandchildren, Jeff Bailey IV and wife, Teresa, Kristin McAlister and husband, Ryan, Kevin Brown Jr. and wife, Amanda, Matthew Brown and wife, Andrea, and Laura Brown; great-grandchildren, Cooper Bailey, Jordan Whitfield, Morgan Whitfield, Paxton Burke, Alex McAlister, Reese McAlister, Kaylee Brown, Kendall Brown, and Kenzie Brown; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers, Cecil Rae Brown and Ben Brown; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Brown; and his parents, Ben and Iva Brown.
Arrangements and services were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, Sperry.
