Funeral services for Joseph Peyton “Joe” Getz, 45, of Sperry, OK, were held Saturday, October 18, 2025, at First Baptist Church in Sperry, OK. John King officiated. Honorary Casket bearers were Thomas Getz, Josh McBee, Tommy Getz, Bill Hadley, Larry Steele, and Todd Witt.
Joe was born December 14, 1979, in Enid, OK, to Thomas Edwin Getz, and Glenda Jean (Lynch) Getz. He passed away on October 13, 2025, at the home of a dear friend, surrounded by family and friends in Sperry, OK.
At the time of Joe’s birth, his family lived in Drummond, just a few miles southwest of Enid. He spent his early years in Enid before moving to Collinsville and later to Sperry. Joe had a lifelong love of football, playing for the Future Owasso Rams through 8th grade and then for Sperry throughout high school. He was also a proud member of the Sperry High School wrestling team. After graduation, Joe continued his athletic journey, playing a season of semi-professional football with the Tulsa Stampede. A fierce competitor, he also became a champion arm wrestler. In 2006, Joe traveled to Manchester, England, to represent the United States in the WAF World Championship. Over the years, Joe earned numerous awards for his achievements in sports. Beyond athletics, Joe had other interests. He loved to fish whenever he had the chance, until he was no longer physically able to do so, and spent countless hours in his shop building, creating, and working on his electric cars. He had a brilliant, creative mind and enjoyed tinkering with all kinds of things. He wasn’t one to sit in front of the TV – he preferred to have music playing while he worked on a project. On May 12, 2001, he married Nikki Steele, in Skiatook. Together, they raised two daughters who were the center of his world and his greatest pride and joy.
He is survived by his daughters, Peyton Ogden and Parker Getz; granddaughter (on the way, January 2026), Karsyn McKinley Ogden; parents, Tom and Glenda Getz; sisters, Helen and her partner Bill Hadley, and Chandra; nephews, Tommy Getz, Roman Driskell, and Ryan Driskell; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kevin Leon Getz, who passed away on September 30, 1996.
Joe struggled with Type 1 Diabetes for the past 11 years, which eventually took his life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that everyone consider making a donation in Joe’s memory to the American Diabetes Association.
Arrangements and services were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, Sperry.
