Funeral services for John Brooks Supernaw, 82, of Tulsa, OK, were held Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Johnson Funeral Chapel in Sperry, OK. Rick Mercer officiated and burial was in Rest Haven Cemetery in Sperry, OK. Casket bearers were Kristopher Wood, Michael Supernaw, David Wood, Brandon Tiger, Jacob Wood, Garrett Murrell, J.B. Wheeker, and Corey Robinson. Honorary Casket bearers were Justin King, Jonathan Wood, Hayden Wood, Donavan Lightfoot, Chuckie Dake, and Bill Hughart.
John was born July 27, 1943, in Sperry, OK, to Lawrence Supernaw and Opal (Lord) Crain. He passed away January 29, 2026, in Tulsa, OK.
John and Patricia started dating in middle school and both graduated from McLain High School in 1962. John was raised in Sperry and then on 75th Street North in Turley. His first job was when he was 17 at Johnny Smith’s supermarket after school and on weekends. After graduation, he joined the Navy, proudly serving his country from 1962-1966, serving with honor during the Vietnam War era. He was stationed at Long Beach, CA in 1962 and was assigned to the Cimmaron Class Fleet Oiler USS Caliente and was a Commissaryman. By the time John was honorably discharged, he reached the rank of Commissaryman First Class Petty Officer. He was a devoted sailor who took pride in his work as a cook, and storekeeper. “Fair winds and Following Seas.” In 1963, John was assigned to a shipyard in Portland, OR. While there, John came back on leave and on December 10, 1963, he and Pat were married. John didn’t tell his parents they got married until he returned to the ship. John and Pat were happily married for 49 years until her passing in 2013. Together, they raised two children. After John’s time in the Navy, John and Pat bought a home and then sold it to purchase their home on 75th Street North. He then went to work for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier. It was hard work, but he loved it. After his retirement from the postal service, John went on to work for Tulsa Public Schools as a truancy officer, where he worked until he retired once again. On June 21, 2014, John married Carolyn Deason and he got to expand his family even more. He always enjoyed doing yard work while his elephant ears and other flowers were his pride. Any and every home John lived in always had the best yard. He always enjoyed playing with the grandkids, whether it was dumpster swimming, playing croquet, and playing in the river and ocean. The ocean was always John’s favorite place to go, whether it was Hawaii, Galveston, South Padre Island, Florida, and California, as long as there was water, John was happy. Even as kids, sometimes he would take them on “fake” vacations. One time, Alycia remembers just going to Mingo Creek in Tulsa instead of their normal place at Lake Tenkiller or just going to a motel in Tulsa or Oklahoma City so the kids could swim. One time in South Padre, Madison was able to bury him in the sand. On the way back to Oklahoma, he went through Border Patrol with his grandson, Kris and his family speaking Spanish thinking it was so funny making Kris panic. He loved having a good time. He loved watching his shows during the day. He knew what was on every minute, whether it was the news or some court show. He always called Wal-Mart “Wal-Marts” and his show, “Two and Half Men” he called “Two Men and a Boy”. John was a Deacon at Golden Hills Baptist Church and was very much a man of God. We know that one day we will see him again.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Supernaw; son, Michael Ray Supernaw of Oologah; daughter, Alycia Kay King and husband, Justin of Vero Beach, FL; grandchildren, David Wood and wife, Crystal of Tulsa, Christine Wood of Vero Beach, FL, Kristopher Wood and wife, Shawna of Collinsville, Julia Guptill and husband, Mitchell of Owasso, Jennifer Murrell and husband, Garrett of Claremore, and Brandon Tiger of Oologah, great-grandchildren, Hayden Wood, Jacob Wood, Kayliegh Wood, Natalie Wood, Jonathan Wood, Madison Wood, Colton Murrell, Journey Hutchins, Liberty Hutchins, and Carson Murrell; great-great-grandchild, Hadley Weeden; stepdaughter, Jannifer Robinson; step-grandchildren, Corey Robinson, Janissa Maasen, Donavon Lightfoot, and Jannah Lightfoot; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins; and many other relatives and friends.
