John Eldon Landis, 79, of Tulsa, OK, was born September 19, 1944, in Toronto, KS, to Nola Martin Landis and Nancy Ann (Merritt) Landis. He passed away November 13, 2023, in Tulsa, OK.

John was a wood carpenter by trade. He loved music, from singing to playing the guitar. He even played professionally back in the 60’s. John especially loved the blues, and oldies, including BB King, Freddie King, Chuck Berry, ZZ Top and so many more.

For several years, no one knew what was going on with John. People often used the word “crazy” every time his name came up. John wasn’t crazy, he was just different and difficult with very bad rollercoasting, his family called “ups and downs”. It was eventually discovered that he was severely depressed at times and also suffered from bipolar disorder. It was a pretty good feeling of relief when his family came to know what was going on with him and why he acted the way he did. They could finally understand him better. John wasn’t always able to take his medications because his heart was so bad. When he was on a “high", wow! He thought he was superman, and he could do anything he wanted to. When John was younger, on his high days, he was either belittling and embarrassing, slapping (whether we needed it or not), or yelling and screaming at us. In his more recent years, even though he wasn’t able to stand at all, he could “walk”. When John was “down”, he was so easy to get along with and enjoyable to be around. He was the most loving and understanding dad. He loved his family and sometimes he worked three jobs to keep our mom at home to take care of us. On the high days, there were small visits, on the down days, there were longer visits.

Forest Gump said it right! John was like that box of chocolates; you never knew what you were going to get with him. Either way, we all loved him very much!!

He is survived by his wife, Rhonda (Ash) Landis; children, Lonnie Landis, Rhonda and Roy Rogers, Janet and Tony Mariner, Victoria Landis, Jennifer Ash, and Summer Ash; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda Lou Landis; parents, Nola and Nancy Landis; and sister, Mary Hicks.

Arrangements and services were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, Sperry.
