Frederic John "Fred" Giltrow

Frederic John “Fred” Giltrow, a gentle, thoughtful man known for his quiet kindness, dry sense of humor, and lifelong curiosity, passed away peacefully at his home in Owasso, OK on June 29, 2026, at the age of 85.

Born and raised in Middletown, Ohio, Fred attended George Williams College in Chicago, where he was an active player on the volleyball team and enjoyed a rich social life with his fraternity. He also played the ukelele and harmonica in a four man band. He graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his education at Wayne State University, earning a master’s degree in social work in 1973. He later earned a certificate in marriage and family counseling.

Fred devoted his professional life to helping others, working as a Program Director for the Royal Oak, Michigan YMCA, then serving as a social worker in the Ferndale, Michigan public school system (where he also coached volleyball). He also worked at a private counseling center in Michigan and the Veterans Administration in Cincinnati.

Music remained an important part of Fred’s life. He especially loved folk and, bluegrass music. In later years, he also developed a deep appreciation for classical music. He enjoyed concerts, art shows, and visits to art and pottery galleries. A gifted potter himself, he created many beautiful pieces and patiently shared his knowledge with his grandchildren and other family members, helping them discover the satisfaction of making something with their own hands.

Fred was naturally curious, mechanically inclined, and very skilled at understanding how things worked. Whether repairing something, devising a practical solution, or sharing what he knew about subjects ranging from mechanics to barbecue grilling, he approached each challenge with patience and ingenuity. Humble and encouraging, he had a special gift for building confidence in others and was a kind and generous teacher.

Fred liked to remain active throughout his life. After retirement, he and his longtime friend Bob Dyrenforth purchased a sailboat and spent many happy hours sailing on a local lake. He also enjoyed kayaking, bicycling, and golfing.

Fred was also an enthusiastic sports fan. He followed football, baseball, basketball, and hockey, eventually shifting his loyalties from Michigan and Detroit teams back to Ohio and Cincinnati teams. He especially loved the Olympics and appreciated the skill, dedication, and genuine competition found in all kinds of sports.

Fred was a deeply devoted animal lover. Over the years, he opened his home and heart to many rescue dogs and several cats, caring for each of them with tenderness and loyalty.

Above all, he will be remembered as a private and gentle soul: kind, caring, patient, capable, and quietly funny. His quick wit, broad knowledge, steady encouragement, and willingness to share his time and talents enriched the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.

Fred is survived by his wife, Linda Klein; his children, Robert “Bob” Giltrow and his wife, Marsha, and Linda Obradovic and her husband, Mitch; his grandchildren, Jacob Giltrow and his wife, Carly, Brandon Giltrow, Danielle Elliott and her husband, Bobby, Nikola Obradovic, and Mia Obradovic; five great-grandchildren; his close friends of more than 60 years, Bob and Sue Dyrenforth; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Hugh Giltrow and Myrtle Jane (Dumford) Giltrow, and his brother, Douglas A. Giltrow.

A private celebration of life was held in Fred’s honor, attended by close family and friends.
