Charles Ray "Charlie" Thompson

Charles Ray "Charlie" Thompson, born on August 2, 1947, left this world on June 18, 2026. The story of Charlie’s life casts a warm and enduring glow for all who knew and loved him.

Charlie’s journey began as the beloved son of Oval Thompson and Mae Young. From those humble beginnings, he built a life rooted in hard work, community, and an unwavering devotion to family and friends.

A proud member of the Sperry High School Class of 1966, Charlie distinguished himself as a leader both on and off the field. He served as Senior Class President and FFA President and earned All-State honors as a fullback for the Sperry Pirates during his senior year. Following graduation, he received a full football scholarship to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) in Miami, where he earned an associate’s degree in physical education. While at NEO, Charlie played fullback and linebacker on the 1967 JUCO National Championship football team, adding another remarkable chapter to an already impressive athletic career. Charlie carried his strong work ethic and determination throughout his life. He served as Plant Superintendent at Dover Norris and was also the proud owner of Sperry Garage and the Bank Lounge in Sperry. Through his work and business ventures, he formed countless friendships and became a familiar and respected figure in the community he loved. Sports remained one of Charlie’s lifelong passions. A devoted OU Sooners fan and NASCAR enthusiast, he enjoyed following his favorite teams and drivers. He also loved race cars and spent many hours in the garage tinkering on them alongside his best friend and fellow driver, Brian Cummings. Charlie was equally passionate about antique and classic vehicles, maintaining a fleet of vintage automobiles for Calvin Meek, including the historic Sperry fire truck, many of which proudly appeared in community parades. Charlie embraced life with enthusiasm and never met a stranger. He enjoyed spending time on the lake, smoking meat for family and friends, caring for animals, and working on the farm he loved. Whether lending a helping hand or sharing a story, he had a gift for making everyone feel welcome.

While he enjoyed many hobbies and accomplishments, nothing was more important to Charlie than his family. He was a devoted husband to Beverly, his constant companion, best friend, and his love. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. He was also a proud father and grandfather who treasured every moment spent with his children and grandchildren. The memories they shared will remain cherished gifts carried in their hearts forever. The Bank Lounge was much more than a business to Charlie; it was a place where friendships flourished and memories were made. Many who gathered there became like a second family to him, and he treasured those relationships throughout his life.

Charlie’s love for Sperry extended far beyond words. For more than 30 years, he quietly worked behind the scenes to help beautify the town, keeping the gazebo and surrounding grounds neatly maintained and free of litter. He was also a driving force behind Old West Fest and fabricated the stage extension that hosted countless talented performers through the years. Reflecting on Charlie’s passing, longtime friend Larry Briggs stated, “Sperry lost a great citizen this week.”

Charlie’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his kindness, generosity, and unwavering loyalty. Whether sharing a laugh, offering encouragement, or stepping forward to help when needed, he left an impression that will not soon be forgotten. Those who knew him will remember his welcoming spirit, his servant’s heart, and the quiet strength that steadied those around him. Most of all, Charlie loved the community of Sperry and took immense pride in calling it home. His legacy of friendship, service, family, and love will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Thompson; children, Billy Sam and Michelle Thompson; grandchildren, Evan Ponshock, and Kallan Ponshock; brother Robert Thompson; his best friend since first grade, Brian Cummings and his family; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oval Thompson and Mae Young; brother, Jimmy Hardesty; and several aunts and uncles.

A Celebration of Life was held on June 26, 2026, at Johnson Funeral Chapel in Sperry, OK with Phil Johnson officiating. Family and friends gathered, and shared memories that honored the richness of Charlie’s life and the enduring legacy he leaves behind. Though we grieve his loss, his presence continues in every embrace, in every remembered story, and in the lives of those who love him still.
