Funeral services for Betty F. (Pogue) Prentice, 93, of Skiatook, OK, were held Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Lakeview Church in Skiatook, OK. Brother Paul Thompson and Brother Jim Stratton officiated, and burial was in Rest Haven Cemetery in Sperry, OK. Casket bearers were T.J. Prentice, Cooper Gorrell, J.T. Lynn, Cobey Gorrell, Crittoned Sayre, and Corbin Gorrell. Honorary Casket bearers were Grady Sayre, Mike Hayman, Jeff Hammontree, Dennis Brown, and Rick Phelps.
Betty was born on September 12, 1932, to Alex and Margaret Pogue in Depew, OK. She said that it was also called Big Pond, but it wasn’t an actual city.
Betty had an older sister Maragret (Skeeze), older brother, Bill, younger brother, Jim and then Jerry, the youngest. She attended at least seven schools since her parents were teachers. She graduated from Sand Springs High School in 1949. This is around the time she met her future husband, Jack Prentice from Sperry. They went on a double date but weren’t dating each other. Jack called her after the date and asked her out and there began their love. After he served in the Korean War, they were married and enjoyed 44 plus years together in Tulsa and Sperry until she was preceded in death by Jack on October 12, 1997. Terry William, their first child, was born in October 1953. Sharon Lynn followed almost 12 years later and was born in July 1965. Betty and Jack were the best parents anyone could ask for. From their love they had 2 children, 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was a devoted Wife, Sister, Mom, Aunt, and Grandma. Betty started working at age 16, working as a switchboard operator for a business in Sand Springs. She then worked in downtown Tulsa as a secretary. She told me that she rode the streetcar from Sand Springs to downtown Tulsa to work. After this she worked at Atena Insurance for several years. She also worked for the tag agency in Sperry, and her fingers would fly while typing. 😊 She worked alongside her older sister, Margaret (Skeeze) Williams for many years. They would go to Betty’s home in Sperry and have lunch together every day. This is a very special memory for me. My friends and I would have lunch with them most days during school. Betty loved to travel and had been to a lot of places all over the world. Most of her trips included her best friend, Ms. Lora Mosier, as she was called by Betty, my little buddy. Betty had been to the Holy Land twice, China following Lottie Moon, the missionary’s footsteps, Greece, Italy, England, and other places over Europe. Her wanderlust never faded even at her advanced age. Most every Friday she would have lunch with her niece, Kerry and her husband Rick. They were very special to her and to us. They would take her on road trips all over Oklahoma. They would pick her up and just go. She loved the Minuteman Pizza Parlor in Prattville and would always get her favorite sandwich called a Dobber Do.
Betty was deeply involved in church work, volunteering, and giving of her time as needed. She was loved by all her knew her. Her love language, as some would call it, was giving. She served with grace and humility that few know. She cooked and baked all the time. She was always in the kitchen doing something. She would make birthday cookies for most people at church. She was best known for her homemade pies. Especially her chocolate pie that everyone would fight over. She volunteered at the Day Spring Villa which is now The Spring for over 15 years cooking lunch for the women in the shelter every Wednesday. She was known as the left-over queen. She would go to the Skiatook Nursing Home every Saturday and had for over 50 years. She would pick a resident that didn’t have anyone who visited them and would visit them and help them in any way she could. She had several women that had been the recipient of her gift of giving. All of these are just a few of the things that she did over her lifetime. One of her greatest loves of servitude was WMU. This is Women’s Missionary Union which is now another name. This is how we say it. In the 80’s she was the state WMU director and Assistant Association Director elected by Pastors. She had a love of missions and the study of missions few would ever have. She loved telling of missionaries and their journeys. She led group studies on Tuesday at Sperry First Baptist and on Thursday at Lakeview once a month. There is a prayer calendar for missionaries that tells a little something about them on their birthday. She would pray for them every day faithfully. She also loved singing in the church choir for many years and in December sang with the Christmas Cantata at Lakeview. On Wednesday night she would play the piano and would play old hymns. Some few had heard or hadn’t heard in a long time. In fact, just a day before her stroke she had driven to church and played. This is only a few of the things that this Lady did in her daily life.
A few years after Jack’s death, she moved in with Rickie and Sharon and their children in 2004 from Sperry to Skiatook. She was always a rock, and they were extremely blessed to have her in their home for over 21 years. She was a woman who loved unconditionally and always there if you needed her. She attended all the family functions that she could on both sides of the family and even extended family that wasn’t blood related like her son and daughter’s families by marriage. She was known as Ma Betty, Grandma Betty, and Miss Betty. We do not know of a saintlier woman who shared her love of Christ with everyone who met her. We are not sure when she gave her heart to Christ, but we know it was at an early age. She was a woman who was one of the utmost examples of a Christian. On Saturday January 10th, 2026, she gained her place in heaven and if we listen closely, we can hear all the singing. We will miss her terribly but know that she is in a better place with many crowns.
She is survived by her son, Terry Prentice and wife, Sharon of Owasso; daughter, Sharon Lynn and husband Rickie of Skiatook; granddaughters, Anna Gorrell and husband, Dustin of Collinsville, Laurie Chambless and husband, Scott of Skiatook, T.J. Prentice and wife, Jill of Owasso, Rachel Singleton-Lynn and wife, Mallory of Lewisville, TX, and J.T. Lynn and wife, Hannah of Godley, TX; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Prentice; parents, Alex and Margaret Pogue; sister, Margaret “Skeeze” Williams; brothers, Bill Pogue and Jerry Pogue; and father and mother-in-law, Pop and Edith Prentice.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation in Betty's memory to The Spring, an organization that held a special place in her heart. Please call 918-245-3995 and someone will assist you.
